The theme that I am following in this assignment is Contrast. For this I looked at number of different photographers who have used different types of contrasts in their work. I decided to focus mainly on typology, which is about the classification of certain types of characteristics such as colour, symbols, and expressions. I decided to choose this because I felt as if, if I looked into it more and looked at the different types of typology I would find something that I quite inspired by, by another famous photographers work and put into a typology. The idea of typology came from the a task we had in one of our photography lessons, we got set a homework which we had to take a series of images and had to set it into a typology. I practised a couple myself as a taster, I took a series of pictures of my face on photo booth and sat in the same position throughout the process and I used different facial effects. I also took close up pictures of Rhia's hand's, she would place both hands together and as she would hold her hands together I would take a picture. I took 15 photos and chose a couple that I liked and put them into a collage. For my final typology I looked up on pinterest and came cross some typology that a student did, she took 12 pictures of the back of her classmates. Of all there different hair styles, hair colours and different clothes styles ect. I really thought the idea of the different hair styles was a good idea, which is where I got my inspiration from. I decided to try it out,a student from my school say she would give me a helping hand for her to be my model, I put her hair up in different hair styles as she stayed in the same position while I was to take photos of her. It turned out quite successful, as I edited the pictures on photo shop. Brightening the contrast and playing about with all the different affects.
Sam Taylor-Wood and Irving Penn are probably my favourite still life photographers and I feel as if I know a fair amount about them, I used Sam Taylor-Wood and Irving Penn's idea for my final piece in GCSE photography and art and design. I decided to follow their route again for my final piece on typology. I experimented at home as a practise, I froze some fruit and veg and set them up at home. I had to think about what kinds of fruit and veg that would be best to use for my final out come and what could come out quite successful, I kind of rushed around a bit with what fruit and veg I can use so I simply just took the the fruit and veg that I had in my house. I used apples, cucumber, tomato. I placed them in a small backing tray and a bun tray and froze them in school for about 4 hours. I then set up a table in the studio with some studio lights around it to give it good lighting and to help heat the ice and melt it quickly. On the table I used some canvas material to place the frozen fruit and veg on, so that when it melted it wouldn't just slide off the table; It had some grip. I set up a SLR camera with a tripod and positioned it where it had a good close up view of the ice, on the camera I used a camera timing remote that takes snaps of pictures every 30 seconds. This happened every 30 seconds for 2 hours.
The ideas that I come up with were never really planned, as soon as something came's to mind I would of just started it straight away. I record my ideas on my weebly website with images and research which I find all over the internet. When I really struggle with keeping up with things that need to be added I write it down on paper and stick it on my wall so whenever I'm adding work to my website at home I can just look at the paper and make sure that I put up the work on my weebly that I am missing. My site is organised with different pages that show different topics. For example, techniques and process would be in different pages alongside with cyanotypes, photograms and Pinhole camera.
For my final piece with the pictures that I have taken of the frozen fruit and veg I started off by choosing six of the 200 pictures and printed them out A4, I then trimmed the pictures, I was going to stick them onto a thin board canvas. I got feedback from other teachers saying that instead I should do a time laps video. This is because I didn't get enough time to spend on taking pictures of the ice as it starts to melt, in the 2 hours that I spent on it not much progress has happened and In them six pictures, tiny progress showed. I decided to stick to the time laps idea as I thought it's probably much more clearer to see the change that had happened. The time laps video is made on I movie, on the time laps video It has effects to contrast the pictures and you can replay the time laps as long as you want. My time laps was around 1 minute and 25 seconds long. It look 10 seconds for all 200 pictures to slide so I put them on repeated time laps which when you watch it gives you a while to figure out the ages that happens in such a short period of time.
I'm not as happy with my final piece as I thought I would be, I know I didn't put as much effort as I know I could have done. I should have prepared much earlier and experimented more with frozen fruits to get a better final outcome. It was so last minute that I changed my idea from typology to a time laps instead. In the up coming weeks I'm going to redo my final piece to make it even better, I'm going to prepare myself and make sure I have enough written information on my weebly site for people to have a better understanding of what my final piece is.
I hope my next final piece is up to your standards!
