Artist Statement & Project Proposal
Artist Statement and Project Proposal We were asked to create an artist's statement to indicate aspects of our practice as photographers and artists and to suggest which ideas and subjects we were interested in developing for the remainder of Unit 1 of the course. I decided to use an artist statement generator I found online called 500 letters (see screen grab below)*. I thought it might be amusing to use an automated process to begin writing my statement. I found several such sites including ArtyBollocks and 10gallon. However, the 500 letters site was at least partly serious and a great way to generate some beginning phrases.
* Note: The 500 letters site doesn't currently work in school.
Here is another statement generator that might help you get to grips with the kind of language artists use. If you'd prefer to do it all yourself, this blog post is a really helpful guide to constructing your own statement from scratch. If you don't want your statement to "suck", check out this advice.
Remember, this is meant to be a fairly light-hearted introduction to writing a statement. You may feel like you don't yet have enough work or know how you feel about your own practice to do this confidently. However, having to think about the following should help you generate some ideas about what you do next. Your statement should:

You may feel like you don't yet have enough work or know how you feel about your own practice to do this confidently. However, having to think about the following should help you generate some ideas about what you do next. Your statement should:
- let people know how you 'see' the world e.g. you are interested in beauty, in the ordinary and mundane, in the way people interact with their environment, in the hidden or mysterious etc.
- how you feel about photography (and related forms of communication e.g. film, installation etc.) e.g. as a way to document reality, to transform reality, to hold a mirror to the truth, to disguise the truth etc.
- what kinds of subjects interest you e.g. the city, people, the natural world, the built environment etc.
- how you represent these subjects e.g. using abstraction, close-up, using collage, in black and white etc.
- what techniques/processes you might use in the creation of light and lens-based art works e.g. film, digital montage, mixed media etc.
- how you feel about the purpose of your work e.g. to challenge, entertain, mystify, delight etc.
my complete statement
Yasmin Cornwell makes photos. Yasmin focuses on the ordinary, she doesn't just document pictures which she has taken but she puts the thought into her ideas and how to adapt it further on with the pictures that she has taken. She see's photography as a way to document reality but by looking at ways that you can transform the everyday so that the viewer may think about how they may perceive whats all around them. Her photos are also interested in change over time and in documenting this, as this is a integral way everyone that experiences life. Yasmin is also interested in space around us and transforming how we see the world in a visual manor.
For example, Yasmin was interested mostly in taken pictures of fruit and vegetables but she wouldn't just take pictures of them by themselves but she works by how she could make it even more interesting and how she can escalate it further by freezing the fruit and vegetables and taking a serious of pictures during the course of 3 hours while the fruit and vegetables melt and go back to its natural soft form.
